Prostate Cancer
Changes/additions to materials (reviewed 7th June 2010):
NHS Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme materials are available to support health professionals in counselling men who do not have symptoms of prostate cancer but who are considering having a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test. It is important that men requesting a PSA test are given information concerning the benefits, limitations and risks associated with having the test. Support materials are available in an information pack for health professionals. These include an information leaflet for men. The leaflet suggests men may wish to work through an interactive online resource, PROSDEX, which contains lots of information on the PSA testing and its pros and cons, and about prostate cancer and its treatment
NICE guidance advises that men who present with symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer should have a digital rectal examination and a PSA test after counselling. The results of these investigations will guide referral and further action.
Prostate Cancer Patient Decision Aid
The patient decision aids on NPCi have been developed to help guide difficult decisions in which patients need to consider benefits versus risks. Decision aids prepare patients for decision making by increasing their knowledge about expected outcomes and personal values.
These documents are based on the best available evidence but are not a substitute for a discussion with a suitably skilled healthcare professional. We hope that their use in such discussions will result in better informed, patient-focussed decision making.
You can either choose to view the decision aid on the screen by clicking the 'flash' version or you can download and print a copy by clicking the 'PDF' version.
