Schizophrenia
Changes/additions to materials:
NICE schizophrenia guideline published
Since we published these materials, NICE has updated its clinical guideline on the management of schizophrenia. With regard to choice of antipsychotic, NICE does not recommend use of any particular drug or group of drugs. It recommends that choice should be made between service user (and carer if appropriate) and healthcare professional after considering side-effect profiles. In this respect, the patient decision aid on this floor of NPCi may be helpful. See the blog for a brief summary of the NICE guidance.
Further evidence to support individualised antipsychotic drug treatment for schizophrenia
A recent meta-analysis concluded that all antipsychotic drugs differ in their efficacy and adverse effects and they are not a homogeneous group. This provides support to the view that the initial choice of antipsychotic should be determined on an individual basis, which is in line with NICE guidance. It also supports the view that first-generation agents, such as perphenazine, should be considered as well as second-generation agents in patients with schizophrenia. Please see the blog for further details.
Schizophrenia Patient Decision Aid
Updated: December 2009
This patient decision aid outlines some important patient-oriented issues around antipsychotics and compares their very different side effect profiles.
The patient decision aids on NPCi have been developed to help guide difficult decisions in which patients need to consider benefits versus risks. Decision aids prepare patients for decision making by increasing their knowledge about expected outcomes and personal values.
These documents are based on the best available evidence but are not a substitute for a discussion with a suitably skilled healthcare professional. We hope that their use in such discussions will result in better informed, patient-focussed decision making.
You can either choose to view the decision aid on the screen by clicking the 'flash' version or you can download and print a copy by clicking the 'PDF' version.
